Institutional Distinctiveness

7.3.1 Portray the performance of the Institution in one area distinctive to its priority and thrust

The SDHR Degree and PG College was founded with the objective of not only offering better education at a minimal cost, but also of socially uplifting and empowering their local community through knowledge-based aid. This society should sincerely serve the cause of the learning needs of the common man of this progressive city. This was the objective set by our founder, Shri D.V.S. Chakravarthy Reddy, in 2006, and the institution believes in high academic, professional, and societal performance with this spirit of sincerity.

Academic excellence has been attained by the SDHR Degree and PG College due to faculty contributions and student accomplishments. In order to deliver high-quality education, the institution actively engages with business and top academic institutions. The institute stands out from other institutions since it is a socially conscious organization with a proactive approach to social outreach programs.

The institution considers that the college experience is not just about studying, playing games, making friends, and having fun. Also, social interaction skills and awareness of gender, environmental, and social injustices are essential. Due to the resources the institution serves, every student has the opportunity to contribute to enhancing their society and evolving into better human beings.

The NSS unit organizes events like plantations and field trips, along with other athletic, cultural, and technological activities, to introduce the students to today's most serious social issues. Experts organized a workshop on Human Values and Professional Ethics (HVPE). Further, each member of the first-year faculty has taken a brief course in HVPE and often engages in constructive debate with the students about a variety of issues. The first-year students take part in a range of activities to make them aware of the critical environmental issues afflicting us. They are encouraged to engage in events addressing environmental issues and taken on field trips to business partnerships.

As a special emphasis, societal development is implanted in students on a broad scale through the active NSS unit, which performs numerous duties to instill social ideals. The NSS unit organizes a variety of events throughout the year, including street plays, cleanliness drives, tree plantation drives, contribution drives, trash management drives, gender equity, field trips, and many more. The NSS unit also participated in the plastic recycling initiative which was effectively implemented on campus.

It emphasized the topic: “Plastic is not bad. How you dispose of plastic is bad”. The institute makes sure that the social values and sense of giving back to society are not exclusive to the NSS unit. In addition to the NSS activities, many students also come up with ideas to benefit society and the institution also supports them in carrying out these ideas. The students have organized contribution campaigns for flood victims as well.

Context

The institution encourages teachers and students to participate in extracurricular activities by hosting events that help them comprehend and acquire insights into some societal issues, such as the vitality of education, employment, and the essence of life (in terms of self-discipline, culture, and education). Furthermore, it provides a pathway to preserving a positive rapport with the rest of society. Students develop their prioritization and time management abilities by participating in extracurricular activities while in college. The well-groomed personalities of talented students give them a competitive advantage in the real world.

The Practice

Since it is integrally influenced by associated discourses of social, economic, cultural, and spiritual growth—without which it is difficult to sustain a civilization, society, or individual—the spread of knowledge cannot be viewed as a standalone academic endeavor of human development. A sense of responsibility is ultimately fostered among students through extracurricular activities that educate them on how to work together toward a common objective. It boosts self-assurance while also teaching people how to cooperate and collaborate with others under a variety of circumstances. In their studies and careers, they get the ability to overcome obstacles. The NSS unit of the institute has continuously assisted community outreach programs by:

  • AIDS Awareness
  • Awareness for pregnant woman
  • Awareness on cyber crime
  • Awareness on dengue
  • Awareness on Menstrual cycle
  • Blood donation
  • Entrepreneurship development program
  • Ethics of life
  • Gender equality
  • Health Camps etc.,
  • Literacy program
  • Say no to child Labor and child marriage
  • Tree plantation program
  • Voter’s day
  • Women’s Day celebration
  • Yoga day celebration

Evidence of Success

Extracurricular activities expand the possibilities for social engagement and the formation of new contacts. Since most of these activities are group-based, they attract students from a variety of specialties, giving them the opportunity to meet people with various interests and cultural backgrounds. Interaction with people from various backgrounds aids in the students' development of interpersonal skills.

Success can be demonstrated through:

  • Concerning NSS at the organization,
  • Activities carried out between the academic years 2016 and 2021 in terms of social services provided to nearby villages
  • The Number of Honors and Recognitions received by the institution
  • Distinguishing alumni
  • Details on placements, pass percentage, and students pursuing higher education
  • Involvement of students in academics and extension activities

Problems Encountered

  • Students' hesitation to take part in the NSS activities
  • A situation involving the COVID pandemic prevented institutions from carrying out a number of exterior operations.
  • Time restrictions on a number of activities.
  • The reluctance of local communities to engage in various outreach and external activities organized by the institution.
